As a parent you have endless experience of how to get the best out of intelligent, capable entities. Sometimes they just need a bit of guidance, discipline or free play. Now you can apply that experience to AI Tools like ChatGPT.
Here are 3 things to remember when crafting a prompt for any AI Tool:
1. Be Specific: Clarify the task
Like with many children, AI tools work best with clear instructions that aren't open to interpretation. The more specific you are, the more focused ChatGPT can be.
Eg, Essay Writing
>>
Write a [word length] essay [for/against] the argument of [topic]. Use at least [x] well-sourced data points in support of our argument. The tone should be [tone]. The target audience is [target audience] who are [charecteristic] and they should feel like [goal].
>>
2. Be Detailed: Avoids the "but why?"
Pre-empt any questions you may get about the task by providing details such as the purpose of the task, the expected outcome or the backstory. Providing additional details helps give the reasoning for the request.
Eg, Writing a chore schedule
>>
It's often a struggle to manage my kids. How can I create a daily routine that my child will follow? The goal is to ensure that children know what's expected of them.
>>
3. Give Guardrails where free play is allowed
Just as important as being specific, is being clear about when they can free play and go crazy with their ideas. Just let them know what the boundaries are.
Eg, Vacation Planner
>>
I am traveling with my family to Miami. Can you suggest family-friendly activities that offer educational experiences that are within 2-hour driving distance? The goal would be to find activities that are enjoyable for children aged 12 to 17. Disneyland would be a good example
