I’ve spent hundreds of hours working professionally in reviewing and building AI prompts. And I've seen most forgotten but most important part of the prompt is setting the role. Here's why.
1. Not defining the the role.
This helps provide guardrails on where it should focus its response.
Eg, Resumé Writer
>>
Role: You are a career coach with over 10 years experience advising fresh graduates on how best to find their first professional job.
>>
2. Not being specific
These are the specifics of what you want the AI to do for you. This is the ask. And being descriptive as possible is the key.
>>
Role: You are a career coach with over 10 years experience.
Specific: Design a resume that is optimised for the role of prompt engineer.
>>
3. Not providing details
Detail is slightly different to specificity. It's any other variables or background that helps the AI execute. The reasoning behind why you need the task. Any specifics about how you're planning to use the results. These are the details.
>>
Role: You are a career coach with over 10 years experience.
Specific: Design a resume that is optimised for the role of prompt engineer.
Details: Highlight that I have over 5 years experience and ideally that I'm looking for a work-from-home role.
